Summer Safety Tip #1 :: Be Involved

As part of our Summer Safety campaign the Coalition would like to share with you -- 4 Tips for Keeping your Teens Safe This Summer. Since parents are the #1 influence in their children's lives we are encouraging families to spend some time this summer creating a healthy and safe family environment for your teens. Throughout the remaining weeks of summer we will feature these 4 tips and other articles that pertain to this topic.
Summer Safety Tip #1::
Be Involved

Encourage their growing independence, but set limits. Be involved in your teens’ lives. Be loving and caring. However remember that it is hard being a teen so give them their space to grow with appropriate limits.

Know where they are, what they're doing, and who they're with. Get to know your teen's friends and their parents. Make it easy for your teen to share information with you about their life and their friends lives .

Network with other parents in order to keep each other in the loop. You need to trust that your child is safe when with other parents in the community. Parents can also encourage one another and keep each other accountable.

Keep them plugged into family life through chores, meals together and family activities. The easiest way to do this is through meal time. Sit down to a family dinner at lease once a week, and don't just eat, talk. The more time you spend together doing family activities and talking about every day things the easier it will be for them to talk about more serious topics.

Come back later this week as we take a look at Tip #2 :: Be Open.  Together we can keep Tippecanoe County a safe and healthy place to live, learn and work!
