Purdue students plan fun substance free tailgate for football

It is great to see students of any kind playing an active role in planning fun substance free events especially when it revolves around a typically popular drinking event such as tailgating.

The idea for the 12th Boiler Campus Tailgate came about last year when student government vice-president, Monica Harvey, supported an initiative to reduce high-risk drinking on college campuses. Monica along with PSG and four other student organizations: Purdue Alumni Student Experience (PASE), Purdue Student Union Board (PSUB), Residence Halls Association (RHA), and the Ross Ade Brigade collaborated to create a safe, fun and substance free tailgating experience for students on campus.

Last year, the groups hosted the tailgate before each home game, drawing more students with each game. They met at the Purdue archway in front of Armstrong Hall and provided free food, music and lawn games. In hopes of making this a bigger part of the Purdue tailgating experience the 12th Boiler Campus Tailgate is moving to the "O" lot. In an effort to reach more students they are offering the opportunity for any student organization to sign-up for a parking spot in the lot.

"This event has provided great collaboration among student groups as well as an opportunity for all of campus to support a substance free event during a normally high-risk drinking time. The goal is to continue to provide a fun and safe event for students to enjoy prior to home football games without the risk of alcohol." said PSUB's Allison Salisbury "We also hope to build a stronger sense of Boilermaker Spirit and encourage students to attend football games on a regular basis."

Student organizations can sign up to reserve a spot before each game on a first come first serve basis by emailing the 12th Boiler Campus Tailgate at psub-marketing@purdue.edu. Emails must be received by the Wednesday before each game and at this time only official student organizations can participate in reserving the spots but everyone is welcome to join in the tailgating experience.
